LEGO Mindstorm EV3

The latest edition of the LEGO Mindstorm Robotics System, LEGO Mindsotrm EV3, is out and they’ve made a number of improvements and enhancements. For those of you who have been playing with the old NXT for a number of years I think you will find some of the changes are really cool. The LEGO Mindstorm EV3 has 4 motor ports, vs 3 in the old NXT. It includes a Micro SD port and, perhaps best of all, it has a Linux based operating system.

They’ve also added a few new components and sensors.  There are now 2 different motors.

The large motor resembles the old NXT motor and the smaller motor, used for driving accessories on your robot, takes up less space and its shaft spins on the main axis of the motor housing.  The larger motor spins perpendicular to the housing axis.

On the sensor side, they’ve added a gyroscope, that allows the robot to turn with reasonable precision.  This sensor, while improved from the original release with a firmware update, has been known to be a little dodgy when it comes to performance.

While there is a new programming system, users of the old NXT-G programming language will find the user interface to be very similar to what they are used to.  If you want to check it out, you can download the home addition here.

If you loved your old NXT, I think you’re really going the enjoy the new LEGO Mindstorm EV3.
