What is Laser Cutting?

According to Wikipedia, “Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications, but is also starting to be used by schools, small businesses, and hobbyists. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-power laser most commonly through optics. The laser optics and CNC (computer numerical control) are used to direct the material or the laser beam generated. A typical commercial laser for cutting materials would involve a motion control system to follow a CNC or G-Code of the pattern to be cut onto the material. The focused laser beam directed at the material, which then either melts, burns, vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet of gas, leaving an edge with a high-quality surface finish. Industrial laser cutters are used to cut flat-sheet material as well as structural and piping materials.“

About the Class:

This 2-hour Introduction to Laser Cutting class gives students a foundation upon which they can take their creative skills to the next level. We will use Inkscape (a free drawing program) to design a simple box. Once complete, each student will have the opportunity to use the laser cutter to cut out their design.

Creation Station has a 60 Watt Universal Laser Systems Laser Cutter with a 24” x 18” cutting bed.

Once trained, students can reserve time on the laser to cut their own projects.

In the Session (2 hours) Class you will:

Begin with an introduction to Inkscape. Students will walk through a step by step process for creating a simple box and adding a little customization.

Once the boxes are complete, student will learn basic laser setup and maintenance. The student will learn the key parts of the laser, how to clean the optics, how to prepare their Inkscape drawing for cutting using
CorelDRAW, how configure the laser for the specific material being cut and basic safety and use of the laser.

Class activities include:

  • Prepare a design from scratch to cut: Learn to use shapes, and letters in Inkscape to create a simple box that you will take home.
  • Basic Maintenance: Learn to set up the laser and clean the optics for optimal cutting and longevity.
  • Configure your design for cutting and/or engraving: Learn the steps to configure your design for “printing” on the Laser Cutter.
  • Set up the Laser Cutter for your specific material: Different materials require different settings, learn how to select the set-up that’s ideal for you design and materials.

About the instructor:

Christopher “Chris” Nichols is a Co-Founder of Creation Station and the Laser Cutter is his favorite tool in the Lab. Chris has Associates of Science Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Information Systems. He founded the Westford Youth Robotics 4-H Club in 2006, which has grown to nearly 70 active members, and has coached FLL and FTC robotics teams as far as the FIRST World Festival.
